EMDR THERAPY

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

The mind can often heal itself naturally, in the same way as the body does. Much of this natural coping mechanism occurs during sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. EMDR strives to recreate these benefits of processing through Bi-lateral Stimulation.

EMDR therapy is a non-invasive, evidence-based intervention of psychotherapy that facilitates adaptive information processing. EMDR therapy is an eight-phase treatment intervention that identifies and addresses experiences that have overwhelmed the brain’s natural resilience or coping abilities and have resulted in traumatic symptoms and/or unhelpful coping strategies. Through EMDR therapy, people are able to reprocess traumatic information until it is no longer unhelpful or disruptive.

What can EMDR be used for?

In addition to its use for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, EMDR has been successfully used to treat:

anxiety and panic attacks

depression

PTSD
anger

Personality disorders
phobias

sleep problems

grief and loss
addictions
pain, including phantom limb pain

performance anxiety
feelings of worthlessness/low self-esteem

EMDR can accelerate therapy by resolving the impact of your past traumas and allowing you to live more fully in the present. It is not, however, appropriate for everyone. The process is rapid, and any disturbing experiences, if they occur at all, last for a comparatively short period of time. Nevertheless, you need to be aware of, and willing to experience, the strong feelings and disturbing thoughts that sometimes occur during sessions.
